Chapter 18

Oliver

The news about the bear and wolf fighting a week ago was quieting down. Although people were still nervous about encountering wild animals in the city, there were no further reports. Yet, sometimes, as Oliver passed people on the street, he'd hear snippets of people gossiping about it.

Were all the people that passed by him actually human? Since being introduced to this second world, Oliver viewed his own world and everyone in it differently. How many supernatural beings had he met that he wasn't even aware of? Had he even had flings with them?

With everything that had been happening, Oliver was falling behind in work. There was a part of him that found it laughable to be worried about work amongst everything else. Yet, it was his livelihood and, no matter what kind of world it was, he still had to make ends meet to survive.

Oliver frequented the library over the past few days. While part of it was because he found it easy to work there, he also liked that he caught glimpses of Anthony working. At first, he was worried that Anthony wouldn't like him being at his workplace, but the vampire showed no sign of annoyance. In fact, Oliver swore that Anthony put more books away on the shelves closest to him than anywhere else.

Such a gesture of wanting to be close without being too obvious was sweet. His heart swelled every time that he caught Anthony drifting through the stacks. Every glance that was shared between them sparked the air around them.

While it had been difficult at first to concentrate on work with Anthony around, he had to focus on the task at hand. The novel he was editing now followed two stepbrothers, one of whom was a werewolf, as they struggled for survival in a chaotic world. It was number four in the series and apparently still had a strong following.

Oliver kept working until Anthony was due to get off work. He hoped to be able to catch him and ask to go out on a proper date. It had been almost two weeks since they met and they hadn't had a proper date. While the picnic in the park could count as one, Oliver wanted more. A romantic dinner out? Maybe a movie? Perhaps some dancing? He wasn't sure what he wanted yet, but one thing was for certain: he wanted Anthony.

When five o'clock hit, Oliver packed away his laptop and rose, pushing the chair under the table. He meandered to the front desk, glancing around for Anthony. He frowned when he didn't see him there, so approached the young woman working at the counter.

“Hi, did Anthony leave already?”

“Yeah, but he just went out with someone else,” she responded.

Oliver's stomach lurched as he nodded. “Okay, thanks.” He hurried out of the library and to the foyer. Anthony was standing with Dakota and Dalton.

“There you are,” Anthony greeted. “Come on.” Although his greeting was fairly light, there was something more serious about it.

Oliver didn't miss a beat as he joined them.
